Bolton Wanderers had a long-standing interest in Celtic's 23-year-old Johnny Kenny and had previously tried to arrange a loan deal for the striker during the summer. Celtic, however, preferred to wait until the window's end before making a decision, during which time a number of interested clubs emerged. While West Brom, Millwall, and Blackburn Rovers all declined the opportunity to sign him, Preston North End made a cash offer. According to reports from September 2026, Preston North End's accepted offer was for a fee of £3 million. Bolton had the option to match Preston's offer until the end but were ultimately not willing to alter their financial plans to sign the Irishman. Kenny, who has two caps for Ireland, has a contract with Celtic until 2029 and a current Transfermarkt market value of €1.20m.
