Sevilla are among a number of La Liga clubs monitoring Rangers' 22-year-old South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya, who joined from Philadelphia Union in the summer for £3 million. A top LaLiga scout has said that Spanish sides believe his athletic and technical profile is ideally suited to the league, adding that several clubs in Spain have followed his performances and view him as a potential long-term option. Interest is not limited to Spain, with Brentford and Sunderland also interested, having sent representatives to watch the defender. Bologna in Italy have also been monitoring his progress. It is understood that Rangers are in a strong position, as Makhanya has a contract until 2030, and sources indicate the club feels no pressure to sell, with a move next summer considered more realistic. The defender has four caps for South Africa and a current Transfermarkt market value of €8.00m. The transfer fee that brought him to Rangers was reported to be in the range of £3-5 million, with his former club having previously rejected a bid of over €3.5 million from an unnamed Belgian club.
