Bristol City are reportedly interested in signing Irish international attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics, which could potentially complicate Derby County's efforts to re-sign the forward. It was understood that Derby were in advanced talks with Ipswich for the 30-year-old. Szmodics spent the latter part of last season on loan at Pride Park and appears increasingly likely to leave his parent club permanently this summer. According to a report from Alex Jones, Bristol City have now also become interested in signing the player. Both a loan and a permanent transfer have been discussed, but it is believed Ipswich favour a sale, which could become a challenge for the interested clubs if a significant fee is demanded. Szmodics left Bristol City seven years ago. Despite Bristol City's attempt to intervene in the transfer, Derby may still have an advantage because of Szmodics' recent loan spell and his relationship with manager John Eustace. The new interest could, however, complicate negotiations and improve Ipswich's position regarding a player who seems to have no future in their first-team plans. The Republic of Ireland international has 12 caps, is under contract at Ipswich until June 2028, and has a current Transfermarkt market value of €3.50m.
