James Ward-Prowse Transfer from West Ham United to Southampton
Southampton are in a strong position to re-sign James Ward-Prowse from West Ham, following the withdrawal of other Premier League clubs from the pursuit. Everton had been linked with a move for Ward-Prowse, but are not believed to be pursuing a deal this month, which has created an opportunity for Southampton. Former West Ham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that there is a lack of interest in the 31-year-old due to his style of play and a recent period of not being selected for matches. Ward-Prowse has not been involved in a matchday squad since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge in September. There has been speculation that the midfielder could return to Southampton since he stopped being selected for the team at West Ham, and Southampton could now attempt to sign him.
West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed in a recent press conference that James Ward-Prowse's future is likely not with West Ham. He said that the situation with James has been clear for some time, that he is not in the options, and that it is for the club to find the best solution for his future. GiveMeSport reported in early October that Southampton were planning for the return of their youth academy product. According to Capology, Ward-Prowse currently earns in excess of £115k-per-week with West Ham. His contract runs until the summer of 2027.
The Sun reports that Southampton expressed an interest in a loan deal for Ward-Prowse, but the required terms would be unattractive to West Ham.
James Ward-Prowse will reportedly leave West Ham United in January because he has been selected less frequently since the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo. According to a West Ham source who spoke to Hammers News, it is certain the player will leave in January. Ward-Prowse’s former club Southampton are among the main clubs interested in signing him, as they look to recover from a poor start to the 2025-26 Championship season.
According to Dean Jones of TEAMtalk, there are already whispers that James Ward-Prowse’s former club Southampton could re-sign him. Jones told TEAMtalk that a January transfer is "going to be on the cards" and there is "already a whisper that he is going to get the chance to return to Southampton."
West Ham are said to be open to offers for James Ward-Prowse, who was signed from Southampton in the summer of 2023 for €35 million. It is thought the 30-year-old, who turns 31 in November, would be open to a return to his old club Southampton. TalkSport reports that Ward-Prowse was axed from the squad for the 1-1 draw at Everton. The Irons will be resigned to taking a big loss on the player, whose Estimated Transfer Value has dropped to €7.7m with around 18 months left on his contract.
Southampton are reported to be interested in a second raid on West Ham with a loan deal for their former midfielder James Ward-Prowse.
