Tommy Doyle joined Birmingham City on loan from Wolves for the Championship season and has started in fewer than half of the games available. The loan agreement contained a clause that would have made it obligatory for Birmingham to sign Doyle for £10 million if the team had been promoted to the top-flight. As promotion is no longer possible, a return to Wolves, who have been relegated, is considered the most probable outcome. Birmingham can still opt to pursue a permanent transfer for the midfielder, whose contract at Wolves runs until 2028, but this is considered improbable, particularly because the club has spent more than £50 million on players in the last two years. Head coach Chris Davies stated that he foresees Doyle going back to his parent club. Davies acknowledged that the player would have preferred more playing time but has nevertheless been a significant member of the squad.
