Westerveld is eligible to play for the club because he was born in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, while his father was a player for Real Sociedad. AZ will allow Westerveld, who was on loan at MVV this season, to leave on a free transfer in the summer. It is reported that Athletic Club views him as a potential reinforcement for the first team, where Unai Simon is the current first-choice goalkeeper.
