The 31-year-old has made only four top-division appearances this season since Sunderland's return to the Premier League, with all of them lasting less than 10 minutes. O'Nien played the full 120 minutes in Sunderland's FA Cup third-round victory against Everton. The player recently said in an interview that he is happy at Sunderland despite his lack of playing time. His teammate Dan Neil recently departed on loan to Ipswich Town.
