It is increasingly likely that English-Nigerian striker Kion Etete will spend another season away from Cardiff City. League Two team Colchester United is the most recent club to show interest in the 24-year-old, but talks have not progressed. Other clubs have also been linked with a transfer for Etete; Port Vale considered signing him before pursuing a different target, and Newport County have been linked, but no contact has been made. While rumours of a trial at Tranmere Rovers were false, the club's assistant manager, Dean Whitehead, reportedly admires him. A permanent transfer is complicated by Etete's wages, which returned to Championship levels following Cardiff's promotion. This makes a direct purchase difficult for most League One and Two clubs without a salary subsidy from Cardiff City. Cardiff City's preferred option is another loan, which would give the forward an opportunity to increase his value before a longer-term decision is made next summer. The club also has an option to extend his contract by an additional year. Etete, who joined Cardiff in August 2022, has a contract until May 2027. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is €750k.
