Wesley Fofana Transfer from Chelsea to Olympique Marseille

Marseille sporting director Mehdi Benatia confirmed that he attempted to sign Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana in the summer. According to Benatia, the attempt to sign Fofana during the previous window was for the second consecutive year. Benatia revealed on After Foot that his approach was once again rejected.

Medhi Benatia said he attempted to sign Wesley Fofana of Chelsea, who is from Marseille, because of his injuries and because the context in his home of Marseille could be suitable for him.

Chelsea are prepared to sell Wesley Fofana this summer amid significant interest from Marseille. Fofana, who has had an injury-hit spell at Chelsea, is a boyhood fan of Marseille and was close to accepting their offer in 2024. Marseille are interested in a loan deal, but they need to qualify for next season's Champions League to secure his signature and might have to pay his entire salary.

Wesley Fofana admitted that he considered leaving Chelsea for Olympique Marseille this summer. During the September international break, Fofana mentioned that Marseille is his city and his club, and he is an OM supporter. He had a talk with Marseille's director Mehdi Benatia, which he found special. However, he decided to stay at Chelsea with the objective to succeed and establish himself at the club.

Wesley Fofana disclosed that he had the opportunity to leave Chelsea for his boyhood club Marseille this summer after being approached by Marseille's sporting director, Mehdi Benatia. Fofana mentioned that he had a conversation that deeply affected him and admitted that he seriously considered the offer. He explained that the conversation was with Mehdi Benatia, Marseille’s sporting director. Nonetheless, he ultimately chose to remain at Chelsea to strive for regular play and establish himself.
