Sergio Canales is departing from Monterrey on a free transfer at the conclusion of his contract, as he is not activating the renewal option. Speculation is increasing about a potential return to Racing Santander, the club where his career began.

Sergio Canales, who is currently playing for Monterrey in Mexico and is under contract until June 2026, has become a target for Racing Santander, who are eager for his return. The president of Racing Santander, Manolo Higuera, has shown interest in bringing Canales back to the club where he initially began his career. Higuera revealed that he has a personal relationship with Canales and has been in contact with him, exchanging messages and discussing Canales' aspiration to play for Racing once more. Higuera expressed confidence that Canales will soon don the Racing jersey, irrespective of whether the team is competing in the Second or First Division. Canales, who started his professional career at Racing Santander, has made 39 official appearances for the club, during which he scored seven goals and provided six assists. His potential return could serve as a celebratory gesture if Racing achieves promotion through the playoffs. Higuera's conviction about Canales' return was shared in an interview with Cadena SER, where he reiterated that rejoining Racing is a mutual dream both he and Canales hold.
