El Nacional reports that 37-year-old Benfica defender Nicolás Otamendi has emerged as a potential target for Barcelona, with sporting director Deco keen on a deal which would likely be worth no more than €1 million (£870,000, $1.2 million).

Mundo Deportivo reported that Otamendi is one of three left-sided central defenders desired by Barcelona in January. Mundo Deportivo also stated that it would be very difficult to acquire Otamendi from Benfica, where he is considered an institution, and that Benfica does not want to allow him to leave.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Benfica's Nicolás Otamendi, 37, is one of three experienced professionals with expiring contracts who are being considered by FC Barcelona to strengthen their central defence.

FC Barcelona has altered its transfer plans and is now seeking to sign an experienced defender in January. Nicolás Otamendi from Benfica is considered a primary candidate as he fits the desired profile of a defender with leadership qualities who speaks Spanish and can play on the left side of central defense. The Benfica captain has an expiring contract and River Plate has also been linked with the defender.
