Recent rumours suggested that 24-year-old English-Nigerian striker Kion Etete had been on trial with Tranmere Rovers, but this was not the case. A connection does exist, however, as Tranmere's assistant manager Dean Whitehead worked with the striker at Cardiff City and is reportedly an admirer of him. It appears increasingly likely that Etete will spend another season away from Cardiff. League Two team Colchester United have also expressed interest, although talks are not advanced. Port Vale also explored signing the player before pursuing a different target. While Newport County have been linked with Etete, there has been no contact between the clubs. Cardiff's preference is for another loan for the striker to help rebuild his value, as a permanent transfer is complicated by his Championship-level wages, which are difficult for many League One and Two clubs to afford without a subsidy. Etete joined Cardiff in August 2022, and his contract runs until 2027. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is €750k.
