Motherwell have announced the loan signing of Alex Paulsen from AFC Bournemouth until the end of the 2026/2027 season. Last season, Paulsen was on loan at Lechia Gdańsk, making 24 appearances in the Ekstraklasa and playing three matches in the Polish Cup. He recently returned from the New Zealand national team after participating in the World Cup as a substitute. The manager of Motherwell, Alfred Johansson, said that Alex has already proven domestically and internationally that he is an impressive goalkeeper with an exciting career ahead of him. Johansson added that Paulsen had a very successful period in Australia and New Zealand, where he received many individual accolades and also played in teams that achieved their goals with a certain style of play. The manager stated that the last two loans were beneficial for Paulsen and that they see this as another step in his development. According to Johansson, Paulsen is highly regarded in his country and is ready to play immediately, as he has just returned from the New Zealand squad at the World Cup.

He is yet to make an appearance for Bournemouth since his 2024 transfer from Wellington Phoenix and has previously had loan spells with Auckland FC and Lechia Gdansk. It is understood that Bournemouth's plan was to loan Paulsen out to help him build his physicality before he competes for a first-team position. Fraser Forster signed a new contract with Bournemouth this summer, and the club has also been looking into another loan for Christos Mandas. Paulsen's contract with Bournemouth runs until 2028.
