According to Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe, the club has a shortlist of three to four goalkeepers for the role. O'Keefe notes that Steele is one of the names being considered, along with Leeds United’s Karl Darlow, while Burnley's Martin Dubravka is considered a leading contender. Steele, who joined Brighton in July 2018, has a contract with the club until June 2027. He did not make any appearances in the 2025/2026 Premier League season, has not been capped for England, and has a current Transfermarkt market value of €500k.
