Widzew Łódź has announced the signing of Giannis Papanikolaou, 27. The Greek international returns to the Ekstraklasa after two seasons with Turkish club Rizespor. Papanikolaou, who previously played for Raków Częstochowa, has signed a contract with Widzew valid until June 30, 2028, which includes an option for an extension. The club's sporting director, Artur Płatek, described the new signing as a tactically intelligent and responsible player who offers many options in midfield. Płatek also believes his experience will greatly support the team. Papanikolaou stated that he always knew he would return to Poland, which he considers a second home. He also expressed his eagerness to be part of the project being built at Widzew. Papanikolaou has four caps for Greece and his current market value is estimated by Transfermarkt to be €1.20m.
