Tottenham Hotspur was understood to be among several Premier League clubs that watched Benfica's defender Tomás Araújo last month, with Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion also reportedly observing him. Despite the attention, Araújo signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Benfica last month which includes a release clause of €80m. A January move is considered highly unlikely because Benfica will not consider mid-season offers below that fee, and any potential transfer is now expected to be explored next summer.
