A year ago, Atlético de Madrid had him on their radar due to his impressive performances at Málaga in the Primera Federación. They viewed him as a potential luxury addition to their reserve team, given his age of 23 and the possibility of him advancing to the first team. Despite the interest from Atlético, Roberto Fernández moved to Braga and subsequently joined Espanyol on loan. Espanyol eventually purchased him for six million euros after he played a crucial role in helping the team maintain their position in the Primera during the latter part of the season. His contract with Espanyol is set to run until 2031, and Transfermarkt currently estimates his market value at €6 million.
