Burnley and Rangers have both held talks and enquired about the availability of James Penrice, a 27-year-old Scottish defender at AEK Athens. The Greek club is now open to selling Penrice in the summer transfer window. A transfer to Rangers could result in a potential reunion for the defender with manager Derek McInnes. McInnes was at Penrice's former club, Hearts, when the defender departed last summer, and it was reported that McInnes viewed this as a significant loss. Penrice, who joined the Greek club in July 2025, has a contract until 2028 and made 16 appearances in the Super League 1 during the 2025/2026 season. A bid from Rangers in January 2026, reported to be €3.5 million, was rejected. In July 2026, AEK's asking price was reportedly €2.5 million.
