According to Peterborough's director of football, Barry Fry, there was significant competition for the player from the Championship and across Europe. Fry revealed that Peterborough nearly accepted a £3 million offer from Norwich City before Fernandez rejected the move, and that clubs in Italy and Belgium were also interested.
