This followed Hull City rejecting three bids from Coventry City and interest from Sheffield United in the summer window. The report also notes that Hull City's manager Sergej Jakirovic stated in August that Hughes's next move would be to the Premier League and that the club values him in excess of £20m.

Jakirovic previously stated that, in his opinion, anything below the player's value does not need to be discussed and that he will not consider such offers because the player is very good. Jakirovic also stated that in his view, the player's next move is to the Premier League, not the Championship. City value the player at over £20m.
