Three German clubs have shown early interest in a potential summer move for Ao Tanaka, a 27-year-old central midfielder who has had limited playing time at Leeds this season, making 21 appearances and scoring two goals in the Premier League. The interest is currently led by Schalke and Hannover, both of whom are contenders for promotion to the Bundesliga. There is also tentative interest from current Bundesliga side Union Berlin, though Tanaka is one of several midfield options they are considering. It is understood that should either Schalke or Hannover secure promotion, they would be in a good position to intensify their pursuit of the 35-times capped Japan international, for whom he has scored eight goals. Leeds are reportedly open to his departure, with their decision also depending on which division they find themselves in next season, and would not rule out a sale if a proposal is considered to be in their best interests. Tanaka feels he is good enough to play at the top level and remains highly regarded in Germany. Having been signed from Fortuna Düsseldorf for £2.9m, Leeds can expect a profit should they sell, with his contract running through to June 2028. His current market value is €10.00m.
