Ajax is interested in signing 33-year-old Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku as part of Jordi Cruijff's plan to build a team capable of competing for trophies by targeting experienced players. It is reported that Cruijff wants to bring the striker, who has 130 caps and 92 goals for Belgium, to the ArenA. A decision on Lukaku's future is not expected until after the World Cup, because the player is focused on the tournament and will meet with Napoli's board afterwards.
In recent weeks, Fenerbahçe, Besiktas, and RSC Anderlecht have also been linked with the forward. Lukaku joined Napoli from Chelsea in August 2024 for a reported €30.0 million. According to Italian media, Napoli is seeking a transfer fee of around ten million euros and also wants to offload his high gross salary. This salary is between 7 and 8 million euros, a figure Ajax cannot afford. Lukaku's contract with the Italian side is valid until June 2027, his current Transfermarkt market value is €6.00m, and Ajax has placed him on their list for a new striker.
