Sheffield Wednesday will challenge SC Freiburg for the signing of the soon-to-be-released Everton defender Reece Welch. Football Lowdown have shared that Wednesday have renewed their interest in the defender, and have stated Sheffield Wednesday would be Welch’s preferred destination.

According to sources close to Football Lowdown, Sheffield Wednesday are expected to renew their interest in Reece Welch. Welch is a 22-year-old English defender who is a free agent because Everton did not renew his contract. It was reported that The Owls were targeting Welch for a loan move earlier in the year, at which time Plymouth Argyle also pursued him. Other League One clubs are interested in Welch, and German side SC Freiburg have also been linked with him. A move to SC Freiburg is believed to be his preferred option. Sheffield Wednesday hope to keep Welch in the country by offering him regular football and an opportunity to be part of a promotion challenge. A move to Yorkshire is thought to be appealing to Welch. The centre-back has four caps for England U20 and has a current market value of €250k according to Transfermarkt. He made 12 appearances and scored 1 goal in the Premier League 2 during the 25/26 season.
