Al-Ettifaq was initially very close to signing Luuk de Jong. Despite having a one-year contract with an option for an additional year on the table, and de Jong giving his approval, the deal eventually fell through. The former Barcelona player was on the verge of joining the Saudi Pro League club, but negotiations ultimately collapsed, paving the way for Al-Ettifaq to secure an agreement with Egyptian forward Ahmed Hassan instead.
