The defender made his debut for Romania last year and joins after leaving Hermannstadt, where he made 39 first-team appearances before the club was relegated from his homeland's top flight. Ciubotaru was born in Italy and has previous experience in Scotland from a spell at Rangers' academy. He has also been with Rapid Vienna and Parma.
