Andoni Iraola has decided against sending defensive-minded midfielder James McConnell to Deepdale, instead offering him the chance to join the first team this season. The decision comes as Leicester City were preparing to compete for a season-long loan for the player, while Paul Heckingbottom’s side was near to completing a deal with Liverpool. The move would have been McConnell's second senior spell away from Anfield after a period at Ajax last season.

The Athletic reported that while Leicester City are considering a loan deal for James McConnell and can offer him a regular role behind Sammy Braybrooke and Liam Cullen, their pursuit may be hindered until they move Oliver Skipp.

James McConnell, a 21-year-old English midfielder and one of several Liverpool young players who could be loaned out this summer, is attracting interest from multiple clubs. A report from The Athletic indicates that a number of Championship teams are showing admiration for the player, as is Leicester City from League One. The same source notes that not all of Liverpool's young players might be permitted to leave, as some could be kept to provide cover for the first team. McConnell, who has two caps for England U20, is under contract until 2030 and has a current Transfermarkt market value of €1.50m.
