Christian Burgess and Union SG have announced they will separate, making the 34-year-old English central defender available for a new club. Nicky Hayen addressed the possibility of Burgess being an option for KRC Genk, stating his belief that the player has other plans, because he would have otherwise stayed at Union. Hayen also added that Burgess is the type of player KRC Genk could use, describing him as a winner who is an irritating opponent on the pitch but a pleasant person off it. It is thought that while Burgess could offer the leadership KRC Genk's defense lacks, he might not suit the team's style of play, which involves more space behind the defense. The possibility that Burgess will choose a financially lucrative transfer is considered high. Burgess joined Union SG in July 2020 and has a current market value of €2.00m, according to Transfermarkt. Middlesbrough has also recently been linked with the player.
