Callum McGregor leaving Celtic?
Callum McGregor has dismissed the idea of a move to join his former manager Brendan Rodgers at Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah, stating that he is staying where he is.
It was stated that there has been no need to speak to Callum McGregor regarding rumours of interest from Saudi Arabia and that he loves his situation at Celtic. It was also stated that if he were to leave in this transfer window, it would be a major shock and disappointment.
Callum McGregor has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and it is believed that Brendan Rodgers is keen on signing him for Al-Qadsiah. Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that McGregor could earn up to four times his current salary at Celtic. Borson said that if the player wants to go and the fee is right for Celtic, that would not be a challenge for the Saudi club. He also revealed a potential tax issue for players moving to Saudi, stating that a player has to stay out of the country for a period of at least two years to be clear on the tax, which is not straightforward. Additionally, former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider he expects McGregor to complete a move to Saudi following Rodgers’s appointment.
It is reported that Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring Callum McGregor to Al-Qadsiah in January. Peter Grant believes the decision on a potential move will ultimately be made by McGregor. Grant stated that if McGregor receives an offer of a very large amount of money, he might prefer to wait until the summer should he decide to leave.
Brendan Rodgers wants his new club, Al-Qadsiah, to make an ambitious bid to sign captain Callum McGregor and for him to be one of his first signings. Al-Riyadh report that Rodgers was promised administrative support and stability in the market for his desired targets, adding that large financial support was offered as a key factor in a potential reunion with McGregor in the Middle East.
Brendan Rodgers is planning a bid to bring Scottish defensive midfielder Callum McGregor, 32, to Saudi Arabia. Rodgers wants to sign captain McGregor for his new club, Al-Qadsiah, and is personally advocating for the transfer. It is claimed that this would be the second time Rodgers has attempted to sign McGregor, having made efforts to sign him for Leicester in 2019. It is also stated that Celtic are prepared to make an effort to retain McGregor, even if an offer from the Middle East that is considered life-changing is made for him. McGregor has two-and-a-half years left on his contract and is not thought to be eager to leave. The possibility of a reunion with Rodgers and a significant financial offer is mentioned as a potential factor. The Scotland international has 63 caps and 3 goals for his country. In the current 2025/2026 season, McGregor has made 16 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 2 goals. His Transfermarkt market value is €4.50m.
