Scout and football analyst Kai Watson has suggested that Rangers could have been monitoring Afonso Assis before the summer transfer window. This suggestion followed reports which claimed the club had scouts at Moreirense's 3-0 loss to FC Porto. Watson indicated that the 19-year-old Portuguese central midfielder was one of three Moreirense players who might be of interest to Rangers, along with Diogo Travassos and Gilberto Batista. Watson also noted that Assis and Travassos were particularly good prospects.

Assis is a defensive midfielder with a good passing range and a solid physical presence. He is considered a player with high potential who fits the club's model of acquiring players to develop and then sell for a profit. He could also be a useful squad member in the next season. The Portugal U20 international has two caps for his country. He has made 14 appearances and scored one goal in the 2025/2026 Liga Portugal season. His contract with Moreirense is valid until June 2029 and his current market value is €300k, according to Transfermarkt.
