The 34-year-old goalkeeper for the national team had recently ended his contract with the Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh. Despite conjectures about a return to Paks or a move to Ferencváros, Szappanos eventually committed to a contract with Puskás Akadémia FC, which will last until the summer of 2028. Puskás Akadémia's head coach, Hornyák Zsolt, indicated that they decided to acquire Szappanos swiftly, within a day, upon recognizing the chance to enhance their squad with such a player of his quality, as he was available on the market. However, Szappanos is not included in the squad for the second qualifying round of the Conference League, which means he will not be playing in the upcoming match against Arisz.
