The Argentine club, under the leadership of Fabián Berlanga, has initiated discussions in hopes of luring him back to strengthen their squad for the Copa Libertadores, as they prepare to face Fortaleza from Brazil in the round of 16. However, Otamendi is said to cherish his time at Vélez, where he started his professional journey in 2007, but remains focused on his European career, particularly with the upcoming Club World Cup, where Benfica will compete against teams such as Boca, Bayern Munich, and Auckland City. In the past, Otamendi also reportedly declined offers from River Plate, his childhood club, to continue playing in European football.
