Coach Eugen Polanski promoted 29-year-old Swiss international centre-back Nico Elvedi to vice-captain and expressed hope that this move would encourage Elvedi to extend his expiring contract. Elvedi had openly communicated his initial plan to use the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico as a stage to present himself as a candidate for a bigger, internationally competing club. Manager Rouven Schröder stated that there is currently no inquiry for Nico Elvedi and that the club would professionally consider any inquiry by weighing sporting and financial aspects. Schröder also wants to extend with Elvedi and emphasized Elvedi's importance to the club. Three years ago, former sporting director Roland Virkus put internal pressure on Elvedi by benching him until he extended his expiring contract. The defender, who joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in July 2015 and has 73 caps for Switzerland, has a current Transfermarkt market value of €8.00m. He has been linked with Leeds United; reports from summer 2026 indicated a bid of €8.5 million was rejected, with a deal thought to be possible for around €10.5 million (£9m).
