Santos entered into negotiations for Newton at the request of coach Cuca, and the clubs attempted to complete the deal before the transfer window's closure. The proposed deal would not have involved a cash payment; instead, Santos would have cancelled Botafogo's debt for defender Jair Cunha in order to acquire Newton. Botafogo, however, sought more money to potentially get a payment in addition to the debt being settled. An agreement was not reached. Newton suffered a right shoulder injury during a match against Flamengo and is unable to play until the beginning of April.
