Maribor has confirmed it has signed a new attacker, 30-year-old Slovenian-Portuguese player Luka Zahović, who is the son of the club's sporting director, Zlatko Zahović. The striker is returning to Slovenian football after six years in Poland and the most recent six months at Cluj in Romania, where he made 15 appearances and scored one goal. This is a return to a club for which he previously scored 81 goals in 196 appearances. Zlatko Zahović stated that the club has signed a forward who knows the league well and has experience with Maribor. He added that the player believed in the club's project and was prepared to accept a considerable reduction in payment to join the club, a gesture also made by other recent signings. The sporting director also noted it was very important that the player arrives well-prepared, having completed a full pre-season with his previous club. This means he is already in a routine of work and can help the team immediately. The Slovenian international has 15 caps for his country and a current market value of €400k, according to Transfermarkt.
