Reading, Luton Town, Stockport County, Wycombe Wanderers, and Oxford United are among several clubs interested in signing York City's English centre-forward Josh Stones before the summer transfer window. According to a report from Alan Nixon via Patreon, Reading, Stockport, and Oxford scouted the 22-year-old during York's 1-0 victory over Morecambe, where he assisted on a 99th-minute winning goal. The same report notes that representatives from Luton and Wycombe attended a different match in which Stones scored two goals against Scunthorpe United. It has been suggested that the former Wigan Athletic player would likely be open to a move to one of the interested EFL clubs if York does not win promotion from the National League. Stones has a contract with York City until June 2028. In the 2025/26 National League season, he has made 13 appearances, scoring 6 goals and providing 7 assists. York City reportedly paid a transfer fee of €421K to Wigan Athletic for his signing in January 2025.
