Xaver Schlager, 28, has informed RB Leipzig bosses that he will not be extending his contract and will depart on a free transfer after the season. The Austrian international has 49 caps and 4 goals, joined Leipzig in July 2022, and has provided 2 assists in 2 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Sky expert Lothar Matthäus suggested Bayern Munich as a possible destination, noting Schlager could be a good fit with Leon Goretzka leaving Munich. Matthäus also stated that Schlager is experienced internationally, knows the Bundesliga, and contributes both defensively and creatively. However, a move to Munich is considered questionable, as the midfielder is currently inclined towards a transfer to the English Premier League. Schlager has also been linked with other clubs, including Juventus and Celtic. For a potential winter transfer in January 2026, RB Leipzig's asking price was reportedly €4-5 million.
