Representatives from the German club were reportedly present to monitor the Belgian centre-back ahead of a potential transfer.

Genk's 22-year-old Belgian centre-back, Matte Smets, is being monitored by scouts. Representatives from Borussia Dortmund were present at the club's Europa League play-off match at the Cegeka Arena. The Belgian outlet Sporza reported that scouts from numerous other clubs, including PSG, Manchester City, and United, were also in attendance. The Belgian reports specified that Smets was among the Genk players who were a particular focus of the scouts.

Smets, who joined Genk in July 2024, has a contract that runs until 2028 and has made 26 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League this season, providing one assist. He has six caps and one goal for the Belgium U21 team. His current Transfermarkt market value is €11.00m. Genk reportedly rejected bids of €16 million and an increased €19 million from VfL Wolfsburg in February 2026.
