Slovenian right-back Žan Karničnik's contract with Celje has expired. A potential move for him to Maribor is now more likely, partly because a deal with the Cypriot club Omonia has not progressed. The defender had been in advanced talks with Omonia, and it was reported that a contract was almost ready for signing. However, the deal was not finalized. Omonia is also currently in discussions with another player, Loïc Nego, and it is considered unlikely that the club will sign both players. Maribor had previously attempted to persuade Karničnik to join them, and the situation has progressed since Zlatko Zahović became sporting director. After an investment from owner Acun Ilicali intended for stronger contracts, Karničnik could become the most expensive of Maribor's new signings. This group of new signings also includes Jan Mlakar and Claude Goncalves. The 31-year-old player has earned 47 caps and scored 2 goals for Slovenia.
