Derby County may become aware of the availability of 18-year-old English defender Stephen Mfuni, as the Manchester City player's proposed transfer to Coventry City did not proceed. The Rams are looking for a centre-back before the transfer deadline, particularly because Matt Clarke is sidelined for three months with a calf problem. TalkSport reports that Derby and Watford are among the clubs interested in Mfuni. Mfuni is a left-sided centre-back who is highly regarded by City and has been on the bench for Champions League matches. The defender performed well during a loan spell at Watford last season. The club's sporting director, Luke Dowling, had previously revealed that discussions with Manchester City were in progress. A transfer to Derby would mean Mfuni would work again with coach Ben Wilkinson. Wilkinson worked with him at City's EDS and had previously described him as an exceptional talent with great maturity and high potential. The defender has represented England at the U19 level, making 17 appearances. Transfermarkt estimates his current market value to be €1.50m.
