The 32-year-old's contract is expiring, and although Villa have an option to extend it by a year, it is considered unlikely that they will do so. According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Cottagers are competing to sign him on a free transfer and are facing competition from newly-promoted Coventry City. Nixon also stated that the West London club can offer superior wages compared to Coventry. A move to Fulham would represent a return to the capital for Barkley, who previously was with Chelsea for four-and-a-half years. Coventry's manager, Frank Lampard, has a prior connection with the midfielder from having worked with him at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder has 33 caps and 6 goals for England, and his current market value according to Transfermarkt is €5.00m.
