Rafał Gikiewicz Transfer from Widzew Lodz to Zagłębie Lubin
Zaglebie Lubin announced the signing of 37-year-old goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz from league rival Widzew Lodz. Gikiewicz has signed a contract that will last until the end of the season. The transfer occurred due to a special rule in Polish football that allows clubs to sign players outside the standard transfer window in cases of serious injuries.
Rafał Gikiewicz has ended his contract with Widzew Łódź and will proceed with his career at Zagłębie Lubin. The goalkeeper reached a mutual agreement with Widzew to terminate his contract on Wednesday, and he has signed an agreement with Zagłębie that runs until the season's conclusion. Zagłębie Lubin made the decision to sign him following an injury to Dominik Hładun, who will be unable to play for the remainder of the year.
According to Sport.pl, Zagłębie Lubin has acquired goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz. Following a serious injury to goalkeeper Dominik Hładun, the club decided to use the right to a medical transfer and became interested in Gikiewicz. He passed medical tests and was then officially announced as Zagłębie Lubin's new goalkeeper. He signed a contract with the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.
According to Portal Weszło, Rafał Gikiewicz is undergoing medical tests at Zagłębie Lubin.
Rafał Gikiewicz, speaking on the Meczyki.pl channel, revealed that during advanced negotiations with Zagłębie Lubin in the summer, he wanted to earn 5 thousand euros per month. He stated that the idea he did not move because of money is nonsense, explaining his desired salary after tax would be 12 thousand zlotys, a figure he thinks no goalkeeper in the Ekstraklasa earns. According to Gikiewicz, the transfer did not happen because the club's supervisory board was not convinced and did not give its approval. The goalkeeper added that there was no offer for him to accept as the board thought for a very long time.
Rafał Gikiewicz, no longer first or second choice at Widzew Łódź, received permission for a transfer and could have joined Zagłębie Lubin in the last days of the transfer window. All parties agreed, but internal turmoil and changes within Zagłębie Lubin's management caused delays, and the transfer was not finalized in time. Source: widzewtomy.net.
Rafał Gikiewicz's tenure at Widzew Łódź may be drawing to a close, as the club has reportedly arranged to mutually terminate his contract if he receives an acceptable offer. The 37-year-old Polish goalkeeper was recently in discussions with Zagłębie Lubin, and a transfer was thought to be very near completion. Coach Leszek Ojrzyński had given his consent for the move, and the keeper was amenable to a salary reduction. In the end, the transfer did not materialize, according to Tomasz Włodarczyk of Meczyki.pl. Włodarczyk also affirmed that the club and player had already agreed on the terms for a potential contract termination. The goalkeeper's situation is still unresolved, and he could secure a new club shortly. His contract with Widzew Łódź is valid until June 30, 2026, and Transfermarkt estimates his market value at €250k.
