Josh Knight, a 28-year-old English centre-back who can also play at right-back, has joined Reading on a season-long loan from Portsmouth. Reading confirmed the move. The defender, who played at right-back for Portsmouth during pre-season, is Reading's seventh signing of the summer and their second defensive addition of the week. Manager Leam Richardson described Knight as a strong addition who brings experience, leadership, and the right character to the group. Richardson added that Knight is a good defender who is comfortable in possession, knows the league well, and arrives fit after being involved with Portsmouth this season. Knight had previously moved to Portsmouth in August 2025 from 2. Bundesliga side Hannover 96 for a £1m fee but had an injury-disrupted season last year. His contract with Portsmouth is valid until June 2028.
