Josh Knight arrived at Reading on loan from Portsmouth while recovering from a minor injury sustained at Fratton Park. Hughes stated that Knight should be back and available for Reading after the international break. Portsmouth want the centre-back to establish himself at League One level as part of demonstrating he can have a future at Fratton Park.

Josh Knight's summer loan move to Reading is described as a temporary departure approved by Portsmouth, which occurred after the club added Benjy Arthur on a season-long loan from Brentford. Knight has not yet made an appearance for Reading since the move on August 28.

Josh Knight, who joined Reading on loan for the campaign, has not yet been included in a Reading squad. The defender featured five times in pre-season for Portsmouth. In their five fixtures since Knight was signed, Reading have registered two clean sheets and conceded five times.

Josh Knight, a 28-year-old English centre-back who can also play at right-back, has joined Reading on a season-long loan from Portsmouth. Reading confirmed the move. The defender, who played at right-back for Portsmouth during pre-season, is Reading's seventh signing of the summer and their second defensive addition of the week. Manager Leam Richardson described Knight as a strong addition who brings experience, leadership, and the right character to the group. Richardson added that Knight is a good defender who is comfortable in possession, knows the league well, and arrives fit after being involved with Portsmouth this season. Knight had previously moved to Portsmouth in August 2025 from 2. Bundesliga side Hannover 96 for a £1m fee but had an injury-disrupted season last year. His contract with Portsmouth is valid until June 2028.
