Jonathan Varane Transfer from Queens Park Rangers to Saint-Étienne
AS Saint-Étienne were optimistic about convincing Queens Park Rangers to sell French and Martiniquais defensive midfielder Jonathan Varane in the summer. The French side was not successful with their pursuit, and he remained at the London club. Last month, claims from France stated that Jonathan Varane could be an ideal target for Saint-Étienne in the winter market. Four days ago, the Ligue 2 side initiated contact to sign the 24-year-old. Recent claims from the UK stated QPR rejected an offer on the basis of a loan with a €6m purchase clause, linked to promotion to Ligue 1. Saint-Étienne have made no offer to QPR and have not reestablished contact with the Championship side or Jonathan Varane’s agent. Saint-Étienne have rated him highly since last summer, but currently there are no negotiations to sign Varane. They are looking for a defensive midfielder this month, and Jonathan Varane is not their priority. This could be because Varane is currently injured. If Saint-Étienne decide to pursue Varane either in January or for next season, it will be difficult. Jonathan Varane has a contract until 2030, and QPR are only open to holding talks as long as it is for a permanent transfer. The report adds that QPR are refusing to sell Varane for a nominal fee. Saint-Étienne must overcome competition and convince Stéphan’s side, if they wish to sign Varane. The midfielder joined QPR in August 2024 and has made 23 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
