Voetbalprimeur.nl reports that Etienne Vaessen has signed a new contract with FC Groningen that runs until mid-2029. Vaessen stated that his contract was renegotiated and extended by a year, adding that he is happy to stay at what he described as a beautiful club. He also said he is very much looking forward to the new season and to experiencing beautiful moments together again. Vaessen said he consciously chose to stay longer at the club, adding that as a footballer one thinks about whether to wait. He explained that if he had waited, something might have come after the World Cup, but he wanted to have certainty immediately and make a decision. This was also because he and his family are enjoying themselves there, and he stated that he chose FC Groningen with his full mind. The 30-year-old Surinamese goalkeeper made 29 appearances in the Eredivisie during the 2025/2026 season, has 15 caps for his country, and a current market value of €2.50m, according to Transfermarkt.
