According to Fabrizio Romano, Al-Ettifaq has approached Olympique de Marseille for their 28-year-old Canadian central defender, Derek Cornelius, who also holds Jamaican citizenship. The Dammam-based club has initiated initial discussions and is reportedly increasing its efforts to complete the signing. This interest follows the collapse of a transfer for Cornelius to Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday, which had led to expectations that he would stay with the French club. Cornelius joined Marseille from the Swedish club Malmö in the summer of 2024 and was on loan at Glasgow Rangers last season. He has 48 caps for Canada and is contracted to Marseille until 2028. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is €2.5 million. A purchase option in his loan agreement with Rangers was reportedly set at €4 million in March 2026. In August 2025, it was reported that Marseille was willing to sell him for under €5 million.
