Japanese international Ao Tanaka, 27, is of interest to three German clubs, including preliminary interest from Bundesliga side Union Berlin. Tanaka is one of several midfield options being considered by Union for the summer. Two other clubs, Schalke and Hannover, are also making preparations for a potential transfer and are expected to increase their efforts to sign him if they secure promotion. Leeds United are open to the possibility of a departure and are considering a sale if a proposal is considered beneficial for them, with their decision also depending on which division the club is in next season.

Tanaka, who is contracted until June 2028, believes he has the ability to play at the top level and continues to be well-respected in Germany. A potential sale would result in Leeds making a significant profit on their initial £2.9m investment. Tanaka joined Leeds United in August 2024 and has 35 caps and 8 goals for Japan. In the current Premier League season, he has made 21 appearances, scoring 2 goals. According to Transfermarkt, his estimated market value is €10.00m.
