CF Montréal is in the final stages of an agreement to acquire defender Tomás Avilés from Inter Miami on a loan that includes a purchase option. The transfer is necessary for Inter Miami, which was required to make a U-22 Initiative spot available to facilitate the signing of Germán Berterame as a new Designated Player. With four players under the U-22 designation, one was required to leave. The agreement for Avilés is being finalized. The move is expected to allow for the official announcement of Berterame, whose transfer from Rayados de Monterrey is reported to be complete.
Avilés, a 21-year-old Argentine-Chilean, is seeking more playing time and a new beginning within MLS after his role became less significant in 2025, partly due to disciplinary issues that led to suspensions. He joined Inter Miami in August 2023 and has a contract that runs until December 2026. Avilés has made four appearances for the Argentina U20 national team and has a current market value of €4.50m, according to Transfermarkt.
