Swansea City are close to signing Celtic defender Stephen Welsh, who had interest from other English Championship clubs, European and Scottish Premiership sides, and also had an offer from Major League Soccer. The 26-year-old has agreed to an early termination of his Celtic contract, which had one year remaining, to seek a new challenge. The English Championship team is set to finalize a multi-year contract with the Scottish defender.

Swansea boss Vitor Matos, a former assistant to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, made a significant effort to convince Welsh that the Swans should be his next club. The player's performance during a successful loan spell at Motherwell last season brought him to Swansea's attention; he made 24 appearances, scoring once and providing one assist in the Scottish Premiership. Welsh, who has 10 caps for Scotland's U21 side, joined Celtic in July 2020 and has a current Transfermarkt market value of €2.00m.
