NEC is seeking to sign 27-year-old midfielder Willum Thór Willumsson from Birmingham City for an immediate transfer this winter. The Icelandic player's prospects at the English club have reportedly diminished, as he has started in only two of his ten Championship matches this season. NEC, which is currently fourth in the Eredivisie, aims for Willumsson to fill the midfield void created by the recent loan departures of Vito van Crooij and Robert González.
The player was also offered to his former club, Go Ahead Eagles, but director Jan Willem van Dop stated to RTV Oost that there was no room for him at the club. Willumsson has a contract in England until mid-2028. While de Gelderlander did not mention a transfer fee, the expectation is that NEC will pay less than the four million euros that Birmingham paid to Go Ahead Eagles in 2024.
