Swedish winger Emil Forsberg, 35, is expected to extend his contract with MLS club New York Red Bulls, and when that contract ends in the summer, he is open to returning to play in Allsvenskan. Robin Olsen, captain of Malmö FF and a close friend of Forsberg, stated he wants to get Forsberg to Malmö if he returns. Olsen said he would start speaking well of Forsberg to the club, though he felt it was unnecessary as his quality is well-known. Olsen, who described their friendship as very close, noted that Forsberg had a good period at the club previously and still has friends in the team.

Forsberg played for Malmö FF between 2013 and 2014, winning the league title in both seasons. Forsberg has 92 caps and 21 goals for Sweden. In the current 2025/2026 Major League Soccer season, he has made 29 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing 6 assists. His current Transfermarkt market value is €1.8M. He moved from RB Leipzig to New York RB in January 2024 for a reported fee of €3.0M.
